Many businesses in Angola started on Instagram, and with good reason: it is free, it is where customers spend their time and all you need to get started is a phone. Sooner or later the question comes up: “Do I really need a website, or is Instagram enough?” The answer depends on your business. In this article we explain what each one does well, where each one falls short and how to use both together.
What Instagram does well
Instagram is a living shop window. It shows the day-to-day life of the business, the products, the dishes, the team and what goes on behind the scenes, in a way a website rarely can.
- Closeness: followers feel they know the brand and the people behind it.
- Conversation: comments and direct messages let you answer questions on the spot.
- Discovery: with good content and ads, you reach people who do not know you yet.
- Speed: posting something new takes minutes.
For a business that is just starting out, sells mainly through messages and has a loyal local audience, Instagram can be enough for a while.
The limits of relying only on Instagram
The problem is not using Instagram. It is relying on it alone.
- The account is not yours. If it is blocked or hacked, or if the rules change, you lose contact with your customers overnight.
- Reach depends on the algorithm. Not all your followers see your posts, and more and more, reach has to be paid for with ads.
- You do not show up when people look for you on Google. Anyone searching for “furniture shop in Luanda” or “vet clinic in Kilamba” finds websites and Google profiles, rarely Instagram profiles.
- Information gets lost. Prices, opening hours, services and terms end up scattered across old posts and highlights. Customers have to send a message to ask what they could have read on a page.
- Less trust for bigger purchases. For higher-value services, many people look for a website before they decide.
What a website does that Instagram does not
A website is the only digital space that is truly yours. No one can block it, and you decide what appears and how.
- It shows up on Google when someone searches for what you sell, not just for your name. Google reads the pages of the website, understands what they are about and shows them to people who are searching. You can read how this works in Google's guide to Search.
- It organizes information: one page per service, prices if you want to show them, opening hours, the map and frequently asked questions.
- It receives requests: quote forms, appointments, bookings or an online shop, all arriving in your inbox.
- It speaks several languages: Portuguese and English, if you have foreign customers.
- It builds credibility: your own domain and a professional email address, such as info@yourcompany.ao, show that you are serious.
When you really need a website
There are clear signs that Instagram is no longer enough:
- Your customers search on Google before they buy or book.
- You sell high-value services, where trust weighs on the decision.
- You want to receive bookings, appointments or quote requests without relying on messages.
- You have foreign customers or businesses as customers.
- You want to run Google campaigns: an ad needs a landing page.
- You answer the same questions by message every day.
If you recognize yourself in two or more of these points, a website will save you time and bring in customers who cannot find you today. We explain how we work on the website design page.
How to use both together
The best strategy is not to choose, it is to connect the two:
- Instagram draws people in, the website converts. Posts spark interest; the website answers questions and takes the request.
- Link in bio to the website, or to the right page: the menu, the catalogue or the form.
- The website shows your social media, for people who want to follow the brand.
- The same WhatsApp everywhere, so customers can reach you with one tap.
- Google brings in people who do not know you yet: with a good website and a Google profile, as we explain in the guide how to appear on Google Maps.
If you do not have time to post regularly, social media management can take care of it for you, connected to your website.
Where to start
- Write down the questions customers ask you most often by message.
- See how your customers look for you: by name, or by service?
- Start with a simple, fast website with the essentials: what you do, for whom, where and how to get in touch.
- Connect the website to Instagram, WhatsApp and your Google profile.
- Add what is missing as the business grows: bookings, a shop, more languages.
